Rangers sign nine-year veteran to bolster bullpen image

The Texas Rangers have dealt with plenty of turnover this offseason, especially in the bullpen.

Texas lost Phil Maton, Hoby Milner, Shawn Armstrong and Jacob Webb to free-agency.

As a result, they've signed replacements in the form of Alexis Diaz, Tyler Alexander and Carter Baumler.

They continued to fill that void Sunday, agreeing to a one-year $4 million contract with nine-year veteran Jakob Junis. The contract includes a mutual option for the 2027 season.

Junis has been a durable arm throughout his career, with 46 wins, a 4.36 ERA and nearly 850 career innings. Prior to Texas, Junis has spent time with the Kansas City Royals, San Francisco Giants and Cleveland Guardians

According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, Texas intends to use Junis as a reliever despite spending four seasons as a starter.

However, last season with the Guardians, Junis was solely a reliever, the first season of his career in which he did not record a start.

He transitioned to his new role well, finishing the season with a 4-1 record and a 2.97 ERA over 66 2/3 innings.

It's safe to say he's fared better in his career as a reliever, posting a sub 3.00 ERA over the past two seasons, the only time he's reached that mark in his career.

He'll hope to continue that level of performance in Texas, pitching in high-leverage moments for the Rangers.
