Cardinals urged to cut ties with utility man before the end of the season image

The St. Louis Cardinals took a chance on utility man Garrett Hampson this season. After spending time with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Cincinnati Reds, the slugger was claimed off waivers toward the tail-end of June.

He found a spot in the Cardinals' lineup, filling in when needed. He has played games in all three outfield spots, second base, shortstop, and third base, and he has even pitched an inning.

However, he has struggled on the offensive side of things. Through 33 games, he is hitting just .107/.138/.143 with zero home runs and one run batted in, and Red Bird Rants' Stephen Parello urges the club to move on from Hampson before the season ends.

"There's a reason why the Cardinals are Hampson's third team this season alone, and the smart move would be to move on and let him find another opportunity elsewhere."

Moving on from Garrett Hampson would open room for prospects to make their debuts

As the regular season continues to dwindle, St. Louis' chances for a postseason spot are getting smaller and smaller. With limited playoff hope, it would be a good idea to call up some of the club's prospects and give them a shot at big-league action.

Slugging outfielders Josh Baez or Nathan Church, who are estimated to make their debuts next season, would be great candidates. They could also see what Leonardo Bernal looks like behind the dish. He is the club's third-ranked prospect and is expected to be called up during the 2026 season.
