Cardinals' Sonny Gray reveals stance on future in St. Louis image

St. Louis Cardinals' pitcher Sonny Gray took the mound on Wednesday night for his final start of the 2025 MLB season. Gray gave the Cardinals six innings and allowed just two earned runs on seven hits and two walks, while striking out seven batters.

The Cardinals' pitcher gave St. Louis two quality starts in his final home start and final overall outing of the season.

After Wednesday night's outing, Gray spoke with reporters about his future in St. Louis.

Gray Reveals Stance on Cardinals' Future

Gray is finishing his 13th year in the MLB, and has pitched in the playoffs in just three of those years. The veteran pitcher signed with the Cardinals in 2024 with championship aspirations, and nothing close to that has transpired.

"I mean, I’m going to be 36, it’s going to be my 14th season, last year of my contract. … I don’t know what that looks like for me yet," Gray said (h/t The Athletic). "I don’t know what the future holds for me. I want to win. I expect to win, and I came here with the expectation to win."

Since Gray arrived in St. Louis, he's seen back-to-back losing seasons and no improvement. The Cardinals haven't made any big moves to signal positive growth and they're in the middle of a stagnant rebuild.

"I have enjoyed my time (in St. Louis). I love the people. But I came here to win," Gray said (h/t The Athletic). "I signed here two years ago with the expectation of winning and trying to win. That hasn’t played out that way."

Gray signed a three-year, $75 million contract with the Cardinals in 2024, and will be entering the final year of that deal this offseason.

With the Cardinals' continuing to rebuild, and looking like they're more than one year away from World Series contention, this may have been Gray's last year in St. Louis.

The Cardinals have a few veterans who could be moving this offseason, as the Cardinals move toward rebuilding around young talent.

Gray has a no-trade clause in his contract, so if he were to be moved, he would have a say in where he lands. The veteran pitcher wants to play postseason baseball at this point in his career and St. Louis hasn't provided that.

"Just to be frank and honest, I definitely think I do. Having said that, whether I decide I want to go somewhere, whether that actually happens, I still don’t have complete control of that," Gray said (h/t The Athletic). "Obviously, I have control of where I don’t go, but I think I do (have a decision to make)."

Gray started 32 games this seasons and covered 180.2 innings for the Cardinals, and the veteran struck out over 200 batters for the third time in his career.

The Cardinals' starter showed he still has it in 2025, and now he could be looking for a new home in 2026.
