The St. Louis Cardinals have not exactly had the best season in 2025, but it wasn't necessarily all that bad.

Although they did have to part ways with closing pitcher Ryan Helsley thanks to a trade with the New York Mets at the trade deadline, they were able to keep third baseman Nolan Arenado, who in turn was injured for a large part after that deal went down.

And now, with the team sitting at .500 and well outside the realm of the NL Wild Card, the talks now surround the offseason and any moves that the team might make in the winter.

San Francisco Predicted To Pursue Sonny Gray

And if the talks are true, the team could be giving up another one of their elite arms over the offseason, as Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle has proposed that the San Francisco Giants could have been facing their future teammate during a recent loss to Gray and the Cardinals.

Slusser goes on to explain that Gray is "precisely the type of starter" the Giants will hope to pursue over the offseason and also made note of Gray's relationship with Giants manager Bob Melvin, the two of them formerly together on the Athletics.

"Gray is precisely the type of starter the Giants are likely to target this season, especially if Justin Verlander does not re-sign with the team," Slusser said. "They’d like another veteran to go along with Logan Webb and Robbie Ray, and while Gray’s deal is eye-popping, Gray would cost very little in terms of prospects."

Gray has been nothing short of sensational for the Red Birds, a surefire silver lining on the mound, holding a 13-8 record in 2025 with a 4.45 ERA and 179 strikeouts.
