The St. Louis Cardinals welcomed Chaim Bloom as their newest president of baseball operations earlier this week. He took over for John Mozeliak, who stepped down at the end of the season.

Bloom has a ton on his plate going into the 2026 season. He is tasked with putting together a better product to hopefully bring fans back into Busch Stadium and get them to passionately care for this team once again.

He has already made some coaching changes, hiring Brant Brown to be the new hitting coach, Jon Jay as a coach, and Willie McGee as special assistant to Bloom. However, Bloom added another item to his list of things to do.

On Friday, The Athletic's Katie Woo reported that Bloom was looking to hire someone to oversee the pro scouting department. She explained the exact nature of the role, which Bloom believes will help the club find and manage talent.

"Although the title of the position has not been finalized, the job will be comparable to a director-level role. This will not alter assistant general manager and scouting director Randy Flores' role within the organization, a source described. Instead, it will allow for more separation between amateur scouting and pro scouting, with the organization searching for better evaluations of players in other organizations."

The goal is to better address gaps they have missed in things like trades over the years and improve their player evaluation. The separation also allows amateur scouts, who draft players, to focus solely on that, and pro scouts, who evaluate trade or free agent targets, can focus more on that.
