The St. Louis Cardinals go into the offseason searching for answers. They have missed the postseason for the last three years, and fans have made their voices heard with the club experiencing season-low attendance numbers this season.
It is apparent that something needs to change in St. Louis, and some of that change has already happened. On Tuesday, Chaim Bloom took over for John Mozeliak as the team's next president of baseball operations.
He will go into the offseason looking to add players to help build their core and potentially get rid of some players that could bring valuable assets in return. Bloom will also look to make some upgrades to their starting rotation.
Cardinals advised to reunite with pitcher to help bolster rotation
Luckily for Bloom, there will be a ton of great options regarding free-agent starting pitchers. However, Redbirds Rants' Josh Jacobs points to a reunion with Jordan Montgomery as something that could come to fruition.
"On one hand, this is for sure a buy-low opportunity for Bloom, but actually probably works more so as a midseason reinforcement and potential option for 2027 than an arm the club can use as depth early in the season."
Montgomery played for the Cardinals in 2022 and 2023 before being traded to the Texas Rangers. He tore his UCL in spring training and underwent Tommy John surgery in March.
Montgomery will be out for the first part of the 2026 season, but could be viewed as a midseason reinforcement. He will not be a name that gets many fans excited, but his familiarity with the club and his stock over the last year should play into St. Louis' favor.
