Why one Jorge Polanco trait will make him tough for Mariners to re-sign in free agency image

The Seattle Mariners have to get their priorities in order, because a few of their important hitters have hit free agency.

Josh Naylor, Eugenio Suarez and Jorge Polanco are all on the open market.

The general expectation is that the Mariners will focus on getting Naylor back in the fold, but that could lead to Suarez and/or Polanco going elsewhere.

Polanco has one trait in particular that will make him desirable: He's versatile.

The Athletic laid out these points in a new article:

"Teams are considering Jorge Polanco at first base and third as well as second base, people familiar with talks regarding the free agent said," The Athletic wrote on Thursday. "Polanco, who had knee surgery in October 2024, demonstrated better health in 2025, bouncing back offensively and playing more frequently at second base in the second half. He made just 34 starts at second base overall but 15 of them were in September. For his career, Polanco, 32, has played in just one game at first base (it happened last season) and 29 games at third, but he took groundballs last season at both positions."

Polanco's bat, of course, helps make him appealing.

He had a major bounceback season in 2025, hitting 26 home runs and putting up an.821 OPS.

Seattle has a deep lineup and also has a group of young infield prospects about ready to break through into the majors, so losing Polanco likely wouldn't be a major blow.

It'll be interesting to see the salary Polanco commands, because a player who can hold down multiple infield positions and bat effectively from both sides of the plate has some serious potential value.
