After a devastating loss to the Toronto Blue Jays in game seven of the ALCS, the Seattle Mariners will, once again, have to wait at least one more season before attempting to reach the World Series.
To this point in the Mariners' franchise history, they have yet to make a World Series appearance and are the only MLB franchise to have never qualified for the Fall Classic.
Mariners on wrong side of sports history after elimination
After being eliminated from the MLB playoffs this season, the 2025 World Series will mark the 48th Fall Classic since the Mariners became an MLB franchise in 1977.
According to OptaSTATS, no other MLB/NBA/NFL/NHL franchise all-time has gone that long to begin the franchise's history without reaching the championship round while remaining in the same city.
The Mariners felt like game seven could be there before the seventh inning, where Blue Jays' George Springer put a charge into one for a go-ahead three-run home run that likely ripped the hearts out of everyone in Seattle.
Cal Raleigh and Julio Rodriguez both hit home runs for the Mariners, and both teams deployed their best pitchers throughout the game. However, once the Blue Jays took a 4-3 lead, Rogers Centre was rocking, and Toronto had all the momentum it needed to advance to the World Series.
