Mariners' Jorge Polanco gets 'coveted' contract update from ESPN's Buster Olney image

Free agency is set to heat up in a hurry in Major League Baseball.

The Seattle Mariners have already done their part, signing Josh Naylor to a five-year deal to remain in the Pacific Northwest.

Rumblings are suggesting that the next guy to sign, at least related to Seattle, is Jorge Polanco.

Polanco is a free agent after a bounceback season with the Mariners in 2025.

Seattle wants him back, but other teams want him, too, and it sounds like it could move quickly.

"Jorge Polanco could be among those who sign sooner rather than later -- he's coveted by the Mariners and some other teams," ESPN's Buster Olney wrote on Friday morning.

It makes sense that Polanco is a logical free agent target for a lot of teams.

For one, he shouldn't cost that much. He's a bit on the older side, and he's not some prodigious talent.

At the same time, he oozes versatility. Polanco is a switch-hitter with both contact and power and even a little speed, so he can slot anywhere in a lineup.

He can also play at any spot in the infield. He's probably best at second base at this point, but it's never bad to have a guy you can move around in a pinch.

It'd be a huge win for the Mariners to get Polanco back. But it certainly could be another team that ponies up a bit of extra cash to land a player who is sought after like Polanco.
