The Seattle Mariners are likely going to make a few moves this offseason, as evidenced by their big contract handed out to Josh Naylor and the rumors about the Mariners' interest in other top free agents and trade targets.
One of the positions of need for Seattle is in the bullpen. While Andres Munoz is great, the Mariners need more arms out of the bullpen to make another deep playoff run.
With a clear need for relievers, the report from Adam Jude of The Seattle Times spells bad news for Seattle's chances of signing one of Edwin Diaz or Robert Suarez, the top free agent relievers on the market.
Mariners get bad news on Edwin Diaz, Robert Suarez
"With All-Star closer Andres Munoz returning on a $7 million club option for 2026 - with options for 2027 and '28, too," Jude writes, "the Mariners are not expected to be in the mix for high-end free agent closers still available, such as Edwin Diaz or Robert Suarez."
While the Mariners' next item on their wish list is "two proven pitchers to fortify the bullpen," according to Jude, the top relievers on the market aren't an option.
Even though Diaz could return to Seattle after a stint with the New York Mets, the Mariners aren't expected to go after Diaz this winter.
The nine-year MLB veteran had a 1.63 ERA in 2025, so the reason why the Mariners aren't going after Diaz is clear: they're trying to save some money by going after less coveted options this winter.

Jude listed free agents Holby Milner and Tyler Rogers as potential options, while JoJo Romero, Jose Ferrer, and Matt Strahm are potential trade targets.
But, for any Mariners fan hoping for a Diaz reunion, such a free agent deal isn't likely to come this winter. The top bullpen arms aren't expected to be the Mariners' target, despite their intention to add multiple relievers this winter.
Seattle is expected to add at least one reliever, especially a left-hander, this offseason. But, it won't be one of Diaz or Suarez, with the Mariners eyeing cheaper and more readily available options.
