The Seattle Mariners had three free-agent infielders hit the open market this winter. After signing Josh Naylor to a five-year extension, only Jorge Polanco and Eugenio Suarez remained on the open market.
With the Mariners looking to add another infielder, whether it's a third or second baseman, Polanco and Suarez were two possible options for Seattle to re-sign this offseason.
But, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN, the Mariners are losing one of those players to the New York Mets. While Suarez might be the better slugger, the Mets are choosing Polanco to join their roster on a $40 million deal.
Mariners lose Jorge Polanco to Mets on $40 million free agent deal
"Infielder Jorge Polanco and the New York Mets are in agreement on a two-year, $40 million contract, sources tell ESPN." Passan reports. "He is expected to play first base and DH."
Seattle is losing one of its key free agents to the Mets, thanks to a lofty new deal for the veteran infielder. $40 million over two years is a lot for Polanco, and the Mariners now shift gears towards other options this winter.

Polanco wasn't playing first base for the Mariners in 2025 as he will in 2026 and 2027 for the Mets. But he did play a lot of second base and designated hitter for Seattle.
Polanco spent just two years in Seattle after being acquired from the Minnesota Twins in a trade for four prospects. While it was a short time, he was a positive contributor and helped the Mariners make it to Game 7 of the ALDS this past season.
His departure now clears a lane for the Mariners to make a few additions to the infield this winter. With Colt Emerson likely to make an impact in 2026, only one infield spot needs to be filled this offseason.
