It wasn’t long ago that the San Francisco Giants didn’t seem like they had much hope. However, things have changed—most notably with rookie sensation Drew Gilbert, who is finally getting his opportunity after the Giants acquired him from the New York Mets at the trade deadline.
“After opening his MLB career with the Giants just 3-for-31 with 10 strikeouts and one extra-base hit, Gilbert has been on fire. The 24-year-old is 10-for-19 with no strikeouts and six extra-base hits in his last six games. The fiery Gilbert has helped spark a Giants team that sold at the deadline and was left for dead after falling seven games under .500 on Aug. 22 following a four-game losing streak — with the June trade for Rafael Devers looking worse by the day,” New York Post’s Dan Martin wrote.
On this tear Gilbert has been on, he has entered some historic territory. Only one other rookie in MLB history has done what Gilbert is doing.
“Drew Gilbert over his 4 starts: 10 H, 8 RBI, 7 R, 6 XBH, 0 K. Since RBI became official in 1920, the only other MLB rookie to reach all of those numbers over a four-start span was Joe Morgan (July 8-16, 1965),” Opta Stats posted.
Gilbert was recently the reason for a bench-clearing incident in Colorado, and former Tennessee head coach Tony Vitello loved it.
“Yeah, I'm almost glad I wasn't there for the Labor Day game when there was that violence, you know. And of course, leave it up to Drew to maybe add a little extra panache around the bases. So I don't know how much the Giants and the Rockies love each other anymore after the last couple days, but man, I loved being in that situation,” Vitello said.

Gilbert is on a tear right now, showing the Astros and Mets what they missed out on by not giving him a chance. If he continues this performance, he will prove to the Giants why he should be an MLB roster fixture for years to come. Joining elite company alongside Joe Morgan shows he is doing something right on the field.
