The San Francisco Giants, like many other teams around Major League Baseball, are searching for their next manager to lead the franchise. While numerous names have surfaced as potential candidates, the organization hasn’t shown a clear direction yet. Bob Melvin was relieved of his duties following the conclusion of the regular season.

“After careful evaluation, we determined that making a change in leadership was in the best interest of the team," said Buster Posey, the Giants' president of baseball operations. "The last couple of months have been both disappointing and frustrating for all of us, and we did not perform up to our standards. We now turn our focus to identifying a new leader to guide us forward."

Posey hasn’t provided any public hints about who the next manager might be, but one surprising name has reportedly interviewed for the role.

“The SF Giants' search for a new manager took an interesting turn on Friday. According to Robert Murray of FanSided, the Giants met with longtime catcher Kurt Suzuki about the managerial opening. Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle was the first to report this interview,” Around the Foghorn’s Jeff Young wrote.

Another name floating around some managerial candidate lists is a very familiar one: Dusty Baker. Baker most recently managed the Houston Astros and is being mentioned as a possible option to return to San Francisco.

“Dusty Baker: Last served as Houston Astros manager in 2023; managed the Giants from 1993-2002,” ESPN wrote.

With over 2,000 career wins as a big-league manager, Baker could be the steady, experienced presence the Giants need to get back on track. He already has a long history with the franchise, and a return could be a fitting final chapter to his storied career.

Still, a reunion may not be likely — Posey appears to be leaning toward hiring a younger manager. But there’s no denying Baker would be a strong fit for the job.

The Giants have an exciting core of players. Now, they just need the right leader. For Posey, that leader could be Dusty Baker — if he’s open to one last run.
