Right-hander Logan Webb is the undisputed ace of the San Francisco Giants. But for the Giants to compete in the NL West, they'll need to add to their starting rotation this offseason.
San Francisco could evaluate the top free agents or explore the trade market for starting pitchers. Names rumored to be available include Luis Severino, Sandy Alcantara, and Kris Bubic.
Another name to keep an eye on is MacKenzie Gore of the Washington Nationals. The Athletic's Jim Bowden thinks it would take just a few of the Giants' left-handers (Jacob Bresnahan, Carson Whisenhunt) to complete a deal.
"The Giants are looking for moderately priced starting pitchers with upside and no long-term commitment, and the Nationals are seeking controllable young starting pitchers in return, making this trade a good fit," Bowden wrote about why the Giants make sense for Gore.
A tale of two halves for Gore
Gore's 5-15 record this past season reflects a bad Nationals offense.
After a rocky April, Gore was one of the best pitchers in the National League in May and June. The left-hander threw seven scoreless innings on June 4 against the Chicago Cubs, allowing just two hits with seven strikeouts.
July, August, and September were not the best stretch of Gore's four-year career by any means, posting ERAs of 6.75, 5.92, and 4.38. The more hitter-friendly Oracle Park in San Francisco may be a good change of scenery for the 26-year-old.
Gore reaches free agency after the 2027 season.
