The San Francisco Giants are going to have a busy winter, and they've already begun making some offseason moves.
Buster Posey recently traded for a former Milwaukee Brewers top prospect in Joey Wiemer, but additions aren't the only moves San Francisco has made so far.
According to Jon Heyman of The New York Post, the Giants are designating veteran catcher Andrew Knizner for assignment after one season with San Francisco.
Giants part ways with veteran catcher Andrew Knizner
"Giants will DFA C Andrew Knizner," Heyman reports. "Above-average framer and defense, hit.306 in the second half with 137 wRC+, and season K rate of 11.4% was by far the best of his career."
This is an interesting decision from the Giants. As Heyman points out, Knizner had a very strong second half of the 2025 season and also had the best season of his professional career.
In 33 games for the Giants as their backup catcher, Knizner finished with a.221 average and a.598 OPS. While that second half was strong, the rest of his season wasn't great.

San Francisco is cutting ties with Knizner just one year after the veteran joined the organization.
He previously spent time with the St. Louis Cardinals from 2019 until 2023, before joining the Texas Rangers in 2024. He's played in 323 games in his MLB career, with the majority coming with the Cardinals.
But now, the 30-year-old backup catcher is hitting the open market and will look to join a team as a backup catcher once again. That strong second-half could open the door for an opportunity, but it likely isn't with the Giants after they DFA'd him.
