This offseason hasn't been the most exciting one for the San Francisco Giants, but after Alex Bregman signed with the Chicago Cubs, things have begun picking up.

The Giants are looking to add a new second baseman to round out what could end up being the best infield in Major League Baseball.

To do so, according to MLB insider Jeff Passan of ESPN, the Giants are pursuing two second basemen in trades with the Cubs and the St. Louis Cardinals.

Giants going after two 2nd baseman in trades

"The San Francisco Giants are aggressively pursuing a second baseman and have been engaged with Chicago on Nico Hoerner and St. Louis on Brendan Donovan, sources tell ESPN," Passan reported Tuesday morning.

Brendan Donovan and Nico Hoerner are the two second base options the Giants are seriously going after this winter.

Thanks to the Cardinals' rebuild, Donovan is available for trade. The Giants were previously linked to Donovan, and while they weren't able to get far, things are now looking up amid this report from Passan.

Hoerner is now only available thanks to the Cubs signing Bregman to a huge $175 million deal, and the team having an excess of infielders with Matt Shaw and Hoerner.

If the Giants want a high-quality second baseman to round out their infield, Donovan and Hoerner are, by far, their best options in the trade market this winter.

Donovan is 28 years old and under club control through 2027. He's a Gold Glove defender with an All-Star nod this past season. While not the best hitter, his quality defense and decent bat-to-ball skills make him a great option for the Giants.

Hoerner is 28 years old as well and signed through 2026 on a $35 million deal. He's a real option compared to Donovan, but he would be a very nice pickup for the Giants lineup, and especially defense, thanks to his two Gold Glove awards.

Either second baseman would be an incredible get for Buster Posey and the Giants. This report from Passan is a good sign that they're aggressively going after the top options to fill their biggest hole on the roster.
