The San Diego Padres are one of the more unexpected spenders so far this offseason. They've signed Michael King to a $75 million deal, and also signed infielder Sung-Mun Song out of Korea.

The Padres aren't done spending this offseason, but to what extent they spend is something to keep in mind. Some players might be traded away, while their free agent activity could ramp up this offseason.

Song might not be the only foreign star to sign with the Padres this offseason. A new report from Francys Romero of Beisbolfr.com indicates that the Padres might be going after top Japanese free agent infielder Kazuma Okamoto.

"The Padres, Pirates, and Angels have been three of the teams that have shown interest in Japanese third baseman Kazuma Okamoto, per sources," Romero reports.

Okamoto would be an interesting signing for any team, but especially for the Padres. They have a crowded infield already, especially after the Song singing.

But, with the Padres reportedly considering a move to the outfield for Song, there could be some interesting movement for the Padres' infield this season if they sign Okamoto.

The 29-year-old third baseman hit.322 in 2025 across 77 games in Japan. His.992 OPS was a great mark, and when looking throughout his career, his.856 OPS across 11 seasons is well worth investing in.

Okamoto is a great fielder as well and could be an interesting addition to the Padres roster. But, with Manny Machado locking down third base, Okamoto might wind up taking over at first base if this free agent deal comes to fruition.

The Pirates have been strongly linked to Okamoto for some time, and the Padres' new interest makes for a fascinating free agent race for the top Japanese star left on the market after Munetaka Murakami signed with the Chicago White Sox.
