The San Diego Padres finished a three-game series with a loss to the New York Yankees on Wednesday night. The Padres saw Dylan Cease throw a no-hitter into the seventh inning. However, Cody Bellinger ended that with a game-tying solo home run.
Shortly after, Cease left the game with a forearm injury as concerns grew for San Diego. After the game, fans the the ball club got a sigh of relief on the Cease injury front, per Andrew Battifarano and Greg Joyce of The New York Post.
“It basically made my hand close tight for a couple of seconds. I don’t think it’s anything too serious,” Cease stated.
The Padres star also said he would've liked to stay in but said leaving was the "right call." Manager Mike Shildt also touched on Cease's injury after the game, and he said that his pitcher wanted to keep going.
“Said he could have kept going, but it didn’t make sense at the moment, so we’ll evaluate and see what happens.”
Cease wound up going 6.2 innings with one hit, one run, two walks and nine strikeouts. It's been a rough year for him as he had a 5.61 ERA entering Wednesday night, which included a nine-run outing against the Athletics on April 8.
Still, the Padres being without Cease for any period of time would not be good, especially with a rotation that has yet to see Yu Darvish and Joe Musgrove.
