Despite tallying just 15 starts in 2025 while dealing with a nerve issue in his throwing shoulder and knee inflammation, free agent starting pitcher Michael King has become one of the top names in MLB free agency this winter.
The 30-year-old spent the past two seasons with the San Diego Padres. King put up an 18-12 record, 3.10 ERA, and 1.19 WHIP while earning an All-MLB Second Team nod in 2024 during his time in San Diego.
He declined his side of the $15 million mutual option he had with the Padres for 2026. Although there's still a chance he resigns in San Diego, King has and will continue to gain interest from multiple teams this offseason.

In a list of the top five pitchers that are available in free agency this winter, MLB.com's Mark Feinsand listed Michael King as one of them.
"Sources tab the Yankees, Cubs, Mets and Tigers as the most interested clubs, though others including the Orioles, Angels, Padres and Marlins are also in the mix for King," Feinsand wrote.
After declining $15 million with the Padres, it only makes sense that King is shooting for a better long-term deal that pays more than $15 million annually.
The New York Yankees were the team he spent his first five years in the big leagues with. Although that could be the place he goes, the 2025 NL shutouts leader will most likely weigh all the possibilities he has this winter.
