Pittsburgh Pirates lead the league in an insane pitching stat despite depressing record image

If you had to guess what team leads Major League Baseball in pitching shutouts, you'd probably guess one of the best teams in baseball.

It seems like, if you're the best at holding an opponent to zero runs over the course of an entire ballgame, you'd be good at winning games in general, even if the opposition found a way to score a few runs.

But, well, not how it works this season.

The MLB leader in team pitching shutouts is the Pittsburgh Pirates.

They notched their 18th on Saturday night.

They are also 66-89.

So 18 of their 66 wins have come when the opponent scores zero runs. That's 27% of their victories.

This is certainly helped by having guys like Paul Skenes and Mitch Keller at the front of the rotation, who often give the bullpen a low score to work with.

And the overall record can then be impacted by bad depth starters and a poor batting lineup.

It's still wild.

The Pirates are having another forgettable season.

But if you showed up at the ballpark on the right night, you may have just seen them pitch a shutout. It was a more likely outcome for them than you'd have thought.
