After the Phillies’ heartbreaking extra-innings loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Division Series, many questions surrounded the job status of manager Rob Thomson.
Philadelphia entered the postseason as one of the favorites to win it all, so fans were understandably disappointed when the team fell short of the World Series.
Fortunately for Thomson, he was confirmed to remain the Phillies’ manager for the 2026 season, with that news being reported early Monday afternoon. Throughout the decision-making process, several of Philadelphia’s top players voiced their support for Thomson, which reportedly played a key role in the front office’s choice to retain him.
Shortstop Trea Turner praised Thomson as one of the best managers he has ever played for.
“I’ve been blessed with a lot of good managers in my career — I’ve probably played for four or five now, and they’ve all been really good — and he’s right up there with them,” Turner said. “He’s got all the qualities. He keeps it even-keeled all year long. He’s great, man. I don’t think you can ask for more out of a manager.”
Star slugger Bryce Harper shared similar thoughts. “I love Topper, man. He’s done a great job for us,” Harper said.
With Thomson confirmed to return, the Phillies now turn their focus to free agency. Several key contributors are set to test the market, including MVP candidate Kyle Schwarber, catcher J.T. Realmuto and left-hander Ranger Suárez.
With multiple suitors expected for Schwarber and Suárez, it appears unlikely Philadelphia will be able to keep its full 2025 core intact. However, if the front office manages to retain most of its stars, the Phillies are likely to be postseason contenders again in 2026.
