To celebrate the iconic 1989 movie "Field of Dreams", Major League Baseball set out for its first National or American League game played in Iowa in 2021, where the New York Yankees took on the Chicago White Sox.
The game lived up to all the hype and could have been a movie on its own. It was a back-and-forth matchup between the two teams up until the last pitch.
Up three runs in the ninth, the White Sox allowed the Yankees to take a one-run lead going into the bottom of the inning. With a man on, Tim Anderson delivered a walk-off home run that perfectly ended the game.
The following year, the Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds had their chance to play at the iconic venue. And while it was not as great a finish as the previous game, the fans were treated to a 4-2 win by the Cubs, but after that, the newfound tradition was put on pause. The city of Dyersville would go on to see major construction and development of the stadium, but now we'll be headed back there in 2026.
Phillies set to take on Twins as MLB returns to Iowa for Field of Dreams
It was announced on Wednesday that the MLB would be returning to Dyersville to start the tradition again. The Philadelphia Phillies will take on the Minnesota Twins on Thursday, Aug. 13.
The game will be broadcast on Netflix, which has recently entered into a deal with the league.
Outside of the MLB action, there will also be a minor league game played ahead of the Phillies-Twins matchup. The St. Paul Saints and the Iowa Cubs will also play a game there on Aug. 11.
This will be the first game and the first chance for fans to take a look at the newly constructed ballpark.
