The Philadelphia Phillies have added a legendary New York Yankees hitter to their MLB coaching staff.

They bring him aboard just months after he was in the Toronto Blue Jays' dugout for their Game 7 extra innings loss in the World Series.

The new hire: Don Mattingly.

The Phillies announced the news on Monday. Mattingly will be the Phillies' bench coach.

Mattingly held that same bench coach role with the Blue Jays.

He stepped down after Toronto lost in the World Series.

Prior to three seasons in Toronto, Mattingly had been the manager of the Miami Marlins. Before that, he was the manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers

Mattingly's coaching career did begin with the Yankees. He was their hitting coach and bench coach in a four-year tenure.

When Joe Torre stepped down, Mattingly was a finalist for the managerial role, but the job went to Joe Girardi. Mattingly hasn't worked for the Yankees since then.

He went to the Dodgers to be a coach under Torre before eventually becoming the L.A. Manager.

Mattingly will be the right-hand man to Phillies manager Rob Thomson.
