The Philadelphia Phillies are making some big changes to their roster in the offseason ahead of the 2026 season. After back-to-back NLDS exits, change is a must for this Phillies team.

Nick Castellanos is all but gone, but the future of third baseman Alec Bohm is also up in the air. With trade speculation from a year ago potentially picking back up, the Phillies being linked to Bohm replacements isn't a surprise.

According to ESPN MLB insider Jeff Passan, the Phillies are "lurking" on a free agent third baseman, formerly with the Houston Astros and Boston Red Sox, as a Bohm replacement. That player is three-time All-Star Alex Bregman.

"Detroit and Chicago, which pursued him last winter but came up short, will rejoin the fray," Passan writes, "with Philadelphia lurking as it juggles multiple potential paths."

Bregman would be a huge upgrade for the Phillies at third base. He's a solid defender, winning a Gold Glove award in 2024, and also a high-quality hitter.

In 2025 with the Red Sox, Bregman hit.273 in 114 games with an.821 OPS. It was his best hitting season since 2019, when he was the MVP runner-up for the Astros.

Bringing in Bregman would be the result of some roster shuffling, as Passan alludes to. He won't be cheap, so the Phillies might wind up missing out on Kyle Schwarber or another top free agent if they sign Bregman.

They would also need to move on from Bohm, which wouldn't be that much of a surprise. After speculation last offseason, the Phillies held onto Bohm. But now, heading into the final year of control, trading Bohm is very much on the table.

Bohm hit.287, a bit better than Bregman, but his.741 OPS was a significant downgrade. Add on his worst defense, and the Phillies replacing Bohm with Bregman would be a significant upgrade.

There is an age difference, Bohm is 29 while Bregman is 31, but it's not enough for the Phillies to be concerned about.

With the Phillies "lurking" in the Bregman free agency sweepstakes, Bohm's future in Philadelphia is in doubt. It's an offseason of change in Philadelphia, and this third base swap could be one of the biggest changes.
