Phillies could replace Alec Bohm with Red Sox superstar, per MLB insider image

The Philadelphia Phillies have an interesting Alec Bohm dilemma on their hands.

Bohm made his first All-Star team in 2024, but crashed down to earth in the second half. He got off to a horrific start in 2025, but he's been heating up of late. What does all of that add up to in the long run?

Next year would be the final year of Bohm's rookie contract, and anyone with access to social media knows there's been speculation that he could eventually be traded. But you don't replace a good-not-great third baseman unless you can get your hands on a great one.

According to Major League Baseball insider Jim Bowden of The Athletic, that very scenario could come to pass this winter.

On Wednesday, Bowden named the Phillies among the expected suitors for Boston Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman, who can opt out of the final two years and $80 million of his current deal and hit free agency in November without a qualifying offer attached.

"Bregman, who is making $40 million this year and signed for two more years at that rate, will likely opt out of his deal," Bowden wrote.

"His free-agent market should be even more robust than last offseason with the Red Sox joined by the Yankees, Tigers, Astros, Phillies and even the Dodgers; he would be an upgrade for all of them at the hot corner."

Bregman, 31, is a clear upgrade over Bohm. He's gone ballistic so far this season, with a .935 OPS and 2.8 bWAR through 50 games, and he's also a much better defender, having won a Gold Glove in 2024 with the Houston Astros.

In theory, the Phillies could wait to see if they won the Bregman sweepstakes before deciding where to send Bohm. And if Kyle Schwarber departs in free agency, maybe there's a way to reconfigure the lineup with Bohm and Bregman both included.

Make no mistake, though. If the financials make sense, the Phillies would happily replace Bohm with Bregman.
