The New York Mets are expected to do what’s necessary to land an ace, and Ranger Suarez fits that description.

Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported that Suarez is one of the first names the Mets would target as they continue to explore rotation upgrades, a signal that the front office is searching for an ace.

“Ranger Suárez... Would be the first calls here. Suárez is consistently effective and even better in October (1.46 postseason ERA),” he wrote.

Suarez has built a reputation as a pitcher who shows up every fifth day and gets outs at the highest level. A 1.46 ERA in the postseason isn’t a fluke, as it’s the type of number that should have teams like the Mets interested.

Suarez will be expensive, but likely cheaper than others, and he brings exactly what this rotation has lacked.

Rather than chasing the biggest name available, as the Mets have done in the past, they could lean toward an arm who fits their need.

If the Mets are serious about improving and building a rotation that holds up in October, Suarez makes a lot of sense.

It’d also be nice to steal him from the Philadelphia Phillies, although most don’t expect him to return to Philadelphia, no matter if he signs with the Mets or a different team.
