The Philadelphia Phillies got their biggest priority done at the MLB Winter Meetings, as Kyle Schwarber re-signed with the Phillies on a five-year $150 million extension through 2030.
Bringing Schwarber back wasn't too stressful a task, as the interest from other clubs like the Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates, and even the New York Mets, had a limit. But he's back, and there's one important person to thank.
Schwarber, during his interview on NBC Sports Philadelphia after signing the new deal, revealed that Phillies owner John Middleton was a big reason why he decided to return to the Phillies this winter.
Kyle Schwarber revealed John Middleton's influence on return to Phillies
"Mr. Middleton was able to come over to our house, and we were able to spend a really good amount of time talking about the Phillies, talking about what the future looks like here," Schwarber said. "Those are conversations I never forgot."
Being able to have a meeting with Middleton gave Schwarber insight into the future of the team and how the owner of the organization plans to help the Phillies contend for a World Series title.
The conversation that Schwarber and Middleton had wasn't the reason why Schwarber ended up singing - it was the $150 million over five years - but it did help make the decision a lot easier for Schwarber.

While most other teams weren't close, the Baltimore Orioles were right in lock-step with the Phillies in contract talks. They also offered a $150 million deal over five years, but thanks to a combination of the fans, Middleton, and familiarity, the Phillies were Schwarber's choice.
It's not a small investment for Middleton to make into a full-time designated hitter. It's a bold move on his part, but as Schwarber said, "I think it's going to be a great investment for both sides."
Schwarber is back in Philadelphia, and Middleton is a huge reason why. Having an owner like Middleton, who's willing to spend and isn't afraid of getting his hands dirty in negotiations, is a huge advantage for the Phillies. And in these contract talks, that advantage might've been part of the difference in re-signing Schwarber this winter.
