The Cleveland Guardians aren’t known for making big deals in free agency, and expecting that to suddenly change isn’t a smart idea. The front office and ownership won’t spend a ton, no matter how many fans get upset.
But there are some buy-low options, including Walker Buehler.
Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report predicted that the Guardians would sign the former Los Angeles Dodgers World Series champion and ex-Philadelphia Phillies starter to add veteran depth without having to pay him much.
“Year after year, the Guardians choose to sit on their hands rather than spending money in free agency to bolster a strong roster, and expecting anything different this winter is wishful thinking. They should at least add some veteran depth to the starting rotation mix, with Slade Cecconi, Logan Allen, Joey Cantillo and Parker Messick currently slated to fill three spots on the staff,” Reuter wrote.
Buehler wouldn’t need to be the pitcher he once was, but it would be great if he could be. He could even view this type of deal as a way to raise his value.
If the Guardians follow their usual moves, this makes too much sense.
When Buehler has been at his best, there have been arguments that he’s one of the better starters in baseball. The only issue? He hasn’t done that since 2021.
