The 2023 World Baseball Classic is in full swing, which means two weeks of competitive baseball leading into MLB Opening Day on March 30.
Pool play was completed Wednesday in the U.S. The top two finishers in each of the four pools advanced to the quarterfinals, which began Wednesday.
The first quarterfinal game occurred while pools was still going on, with Cuba defeating Australia to advance. Japan then beat Italy to make the other side of the bracket. In the days that followed, Mexico stunned Puerto Rico and the United States upended Venezuela to round out the final four.
In the semifinal round, the United States routed Cuba 14-2 to advance. Japan, meanwhile, needed eight-plus innings to take a lead on Mexico, ultimately winning on a walk-off double in a 6-5 win.
