Ken Griffey Jr. is as much a part of the Seattle tapestry as Pike Place Market, national parks, and the Space Needle. So it's only right that this year's All-Star Game in the Pacific Northwest features a new event hosted by Griffey: the HBCU Swingman Classic, a collegiate showcase meant to bring sometimes-overlooked players to the forefront.

"This is an opportunity for these guys to be out there on a big stage, to have some fun with some guys who played the game at a high level and learn some things," Griffey said of the event before saying the idea is to bring lesser-known players on the radar of MLB scouts.

“It gives an opportunity for these guys to be seen; plus, they want to continue their baseball career like everybody else,” Griffey said, per MLB.com. “This is an opportunity for these guys to be out there on a big stage, to have some fun with some guys who played the game at a high level and learn some things.”

It is comprised of two 25-man rosters playing in an exhibition. This year's version will be played before the Futures Game, celebrity softball game, Home Run Derby, and All-Star Game. With Griffey's name attached to it, it's a fun way to keep Seattle engaged to start the weekend. Griffey will be helping to broadcast the game from the dugouts.
