The narrative entering Game 4 of the NLCS was that the Los Angeles Dodgers were winning in spite of Shohei Ohtani. On Friday night, they won because of Ohtani.
Few players in MLB history, if any, have ever had a more productive postseason game than Ohtani did in the Dodgers' series-clinching win over the Milwaukee Brewers to secure a second consecutive National League pennant. Ohtani not only tossed six strong innings, allowing two hits and striking out 10 without allowing a run, but he blasted three home runs to tie a single-game playoff record.
Ohtani's 3-home run game is only the 13th in postseason history, but of all of the legendary names on that list, none did quite what the three-time MVP did when factoring in his work on the mound.
Two of Ohtani's home runs were absolute moonshots, with his second blast clearing scores of fans and going 469 feet. On the mount, Ohtani touched 100 mph twice and generated 19 swings-and-misses on his way to 10 strikeouts.
Getting back on the mound might have put Ohtani in the right mindset to mash after struggling at the plate throughout the postseason, though he will have to deal with a week-long break in the action as the Dodgers await their World Series opponent.
The Sporting News tracked Ohtani’s start against the Brewers in Game 4 of the NLCS on Friday. See what you missed from his dominant performance below.
