Happy draft day.
That is, Rule 5 Draft day, one of the more underrated events of the MLB offseason at the Winter Meetings each and every year. The 2025 edition takes place Wednesday, starting at 2 p.m. ET.
Players eligible for selection cannot be on a team's 40-man roster and have to have turned pro at age 18 or younger in 2021 or at age 19 or older in 2022.
A team must have room on its 40-man roster to make the pick.

To take a player, a club pays $100,000 to the team he's coming from. If he doesn't stay on the new team's MLB roster for the entire upcoming season, he must be offered back to his former team for $50,000.
The Rule 5 Draft order is in reverse order of last season's standings with no lottery system involved.
Teams can also pass on their selection.

There will be a minor league phase, too, which is much less consequential.
