There was little doubt in the days leading up to the trade deadline that Diamondbacks 3B Eugenio Suarez would be on the move.
A pending free agent with 36 home runs, Suarez's bat drew interest from a handful of contenders looking to add some serious pop to their lineup for the stretch run. After the Yankees effectively took themselves out of the running with a deal for Ryan McMahon and the Reds looked elsewhere for a third baseman, the Mariners won the sweepstakes and brought Suarez back for a second stint.
Suarez was dealt to Seattle late Wednesday night with the Diamondbacks far removed from the postseason picture, solving one of the biggest questions leading up to the deadline.

Eugenio Suarez trade details
Mariners receive:
- 3B Eugenio Suarez
Diamondbacks receive:
- 1B Tyler Locklear
- P Hunter Cranton
- P Juan Burgos
First base prospect Tyler Locklear is the centerpiece of the return for the Diamondbacks. While Locklear only ranked as Seattle's No. 9 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline, he has raked at AAA Tacoma this season with a .316 AVG, 19 home runs and a .942 OPS.
Arizona is also receiving the Mariners' No. 16 and No. 17 prospects, pitchers, Hunter Cranton and Juan Burgos. Cranton, 24, was drafted in 2024 and has a 1.96 ERA over 18.1 innings as a reliever in the minor leagues, while Burgos, 25, has a 0.87 ERA as a reliever between AA and AAA this season and debuted with Seattle earlier in the season.
Suarez is batting .248 with 36 home runs and an .898 OPS this season. While he can be streaky, few hitters in baseball have more raw power than the 34-year-old. He became only the 19th player in MLB history to hit four home runs in a game in April, and he hit five home runs in his first four games out of the All-Star break less than two weeks ago.
Suarez previously spent two seasons in Seattle, hitting 53 home runs between 2022 and 2023 in a Mariners uniform before he was traded to the Diamondbacks.
Eugenio Suarez contract
Suarez is playing out a $15 million club option and is set to be a free agent in the winter.
The Mariners won't be tied to Suarez past 2025, so he is strictly a rental unless they decide to work out a new deal with the veteran. Despite Suarez's swing-and-miss issues, his power should make him one of the most sought-after bats on the open market with 150 home runs to his name over the past five seasons.
Suarez has never been a free agent. He signed a seven-year, $66 million extension with the Reds ahead of the 2018 season and played out all seven years, as well as his club option for 2025.
Eugenio Suarez stats
Suarez has 312 career home runs and six seasons of at least 30 home runs across 12 MLB seasons. He hit a career-high 49 home runs with the Reds in 2019.
