Dodgers' Dave Roberts provides Max Muncy injury update after scary play image

The Los Angeles Dodgers rallied in the 9th-inning for 5-4 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday night and pitcher Clayton Kershaw registered career strikeout No. 3,000.

But the postgame celebration was dampened by concern for Dodgers star third baseman Max Muncy.

In the sixth inning, Muncy had to adjust to catch a throw by catcher Will Smith, then attempted to tag a sliding White Sox center fielder Michael A. Taylor, whose helmet smashed into the outside of Miuncy's left knee and forced him to leave the game.

Fans can watch the play here, but it is noteworthy that the Dodgers broadcast elected not to show the replay.

It was a scary-looking play that immediately led to concern across social media.

Following Wednesday's game, manager Dave Roberts provided an update on Muncy's status, according to ESPN's Aiden Gonzalez.

"Max Muncy is getting an MRI (Thursday)," he reported. "Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said initial tests have them feeling 'optimistic' and that the 'hope' is he only sustained a sprain."

Given how bad the the play looked initially, a sprain would be wonderful news for the Dodgers.

But Thursday's MRI should provide more clarity on the seriousness of the injury.

This season, Muncy is hitting .250 with 13 home runs and 55 RBI.
