Canada may not be among the favorites in this year's World Baseball Classic, but they're entering this year with a very distinct goal.

Manager Ernie Whitt has made it clear: He wants Canada to get out of pools this year. That won't be an easy feat, as Canada is a longshot to win Pool C behind the United States and Mexico. However, with a talented roster, it could manage to shock in Phoenix.

Freddie Freeman is the marquee name for Canada, as he looks to lead them out of pools for the first time. He is joined by exciting Twins prospect Edouard Julien in the infield, while Tyler O'Neill heads up the outfield.

On the pitching staff, Cal Quantrill and Matt Brash are the names looking to elevate Canada's pitching.

Canada opened its tournament March 12 with a resounding 18-8 win against Great Britain, but fell to the USA 12-1 in seven innings the next day out. The team faces Colombia next and concludes pool play on March 15 against Mexico.

It will spend all of pool play at Chase Field in Phoenix.

Canada World Baseball Classic 2023 roster

The Canada roster is an interesting one, with some MLB talent, significant MiLB talent, a few smaller leagues, and some players who aren't playing professionally.

Among the players at the MLB level are Freddie Freeman, Tyler O'Neill, Cal Quantrill, and Matt Brash. Those four are the marquee names representing the maple leaf this year.

At the MiLB level, Bo Naylor and Edouard Julien will be leading the charge, as they look to make strong impressions.

Canada also has a few non-Canadian Blue Jays playing, featuring Otto Lopez (Dominican Republic) and Damiano Palmegiani (Venezuela). They will try to make waves representing Canada's MLB team.

How does the World Baseball Classic work?

The World Baseball Classic will see four games of pools for every team. Pools are broken into A, B, C, and D. Pool A is being played in Chinese Taipei, Pool B will be in Tokyo, Pool C is in Phoenix, and Pool D is in Miami.

The top two teams from each pool will advance, leaving eight total and 12 teams eliminated. This is different from past years, which spawned new pools after pool play concluded (pools E & F). Instead, there will just be quarterfinal and semifinal games, followed by the championship.

All games will take place over the course of two weeks -- March 8 - March 21.

In the quarterfinals, the teams emerging from Pools A & B will play in Tokyo and the teams from Pools C & D will be in Miami.
