Will Warren stepped to the mound on Wednesday, getting the start in Game 2 of the New York Yankees' three-game series against the Houston Astros. He and his club were rolling, getting out to an early 3-0 lead by the fourth inning, but it would all come crashing down.
The bullpen would become a letdown once again as Devin Williams struggled, giving up four runs on three walks. The Bronx Bombers quickly found themselves down four with Williams and manager Aaron Boone having been ejected for arguing balls and strikes.
In the top of the ninth inning, the Yankees did all they could to try and muscle a comeback. Cody Bellinger hit a three-run shot to bring his team within one run, but they could not push that tying run across the board.
The Yanks would go on to lose the game 8-7, dropping their record to 77-62. This was a frustrating loss, especially for Will Warren, who pitched a great game. Following the loss, Warren spoke his mind, via the New York Daily News' Gary Phillips.
"It sucks," said Warren.
Will Warren was not the only Yankees player sharing his frustration
Devin Williams was more than frustrated with home plate umpire Brian Walsh's strike zone. He felt the zone was inconsistent, which led to his first career ejection, per MLB.com's Steve Schaeffer.
I said, 'I had four that you missed,' and he threw me out for it," said Williams. "Never been ejected in my career."
The loss further increased the Toronto Blue Jays' lead in the American League East. The Yankees now sit 3.5 games back and cannot afford to lose any more like they did Wednesday night.
