Yankees urged to trade top prospect Spencer Jones for 'bona fide star' image

Spencer Jones is a name New York Yankees fans have been acquainted with for a long time.

The 24-year-old outfield prospect, whom the Yankees chose in the first round of the 2022 Major League Baseball Draft, has had his ups and downs throughout his minor league career. But the 2025 season has been a huge leap forward.

After a preponderance of home runs and a promotion to Triple-A, Jones looks nearly ready for his big-league debut. But with the trade deadline looming, it's reasonable to wonder if his future in the Bronx is assured.

According to one baseball writer, that should hardly be the case.

On Thursday, Zachary Rotman of FanSided urged the Yankees to consider trade packages involving Jones to boost their odds at a 2025 World Series run.

"The 24-year-old has a 1.032 OPS in 58 games overall this season," Rotman wrote. "Jones has immense potential, and the fact that he's having as great a season as he has makes him an ideal sell-high candidate."

"Of the prospects who figure to be available at this year's deadline, Jones might have the highest ceiling, giving the Yankees a prime opportunity to land a bona fide star in exchange. The Yankees might not be comfortable trading a player as talented as Jones, but if it lands them a high-end contributor, they'd be foolish not to, especially with the strikeout issues in his game still very present."

Among the Yankees' needs: a third baseman with pop, an extra starting pitcher, and as is the case for every contending team, help in the bullpen.

How drastic an upgrade would have to be on the table for Jones to get dealt? That's the question the Yankees have to be pondering right now.
