Yankees urged to pursue trade for Padres' Fernando Tatis Jr. image

This Yankees-Padres trade idea from YES Network's Michael Kay would undoubtedly be the headliner trade of the offseason.

On a recent episode of The Michael Kay Show on ESPN radio, Kay said that New York should target outfielder Fernando Tatis Jr.

"Now what do the Yankees need this year? They need a right-handed bat, right? Fernando Tatis is 26 years old," Kay said. "He will be 27 by the beginning of January. Coming off a year in which he hit.268, 25 home runs, 71 RBIs, and 159 hits. He's a brilliant outfielder who can play right or left field."

The Yankees' left fielder from 2025, Cody Bellinger, is a free agent, although Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has made it known he is someone they would like to retain.

What would the Padres want in return?

In a potential trade for Tatis, the Padres' franchise player, they would likely ask for multiple prospects and at least one to two proven Major League players.

Maybe names like Spencer Jones or Jasson Dominguez would come up in discussions with Padres general manager A.J. Preller.

"I would make a phone call to A.J. Preller, 'What do you need? What do you want?' We've got a deep farm system, and this is the type of player that would play huge in New York. He would be a huge star, Kay said."

Tatis moved from shortstop to the outfield in 2021 after struggles defensively in the infield. He was suspended for 80 games in August 2022 after testing positive for Clostebol, a performance-enhancing drug.
