Yankees trade pitch lands Diamondbacks' Eugenio Suárez in 1-for-1 swap image

The New York Yankees could go deep-sea fishing at the upcoming trade deadline.

Over the last few weeks, the Yankees have arguably become the third-rated contender in the American League. The Detroit Tigers have been ahead of them in the standings all season, but recently, the Houston Astros came barreling past them as well.

If the Yankees want firepower, they need look no further than Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suárez. Of all the hitters who could conceivably be available, he's probably the most enticing, with 26 home runs and a National League-leading 69 RBI so far.

Obviously, the 42-42 Diamondbacks are no lock to sell. But if they do, what might it take from the Yankees to bring Suárez to the Bronx?

Bleacher Report's Joel Reuter proposed a mock trade on Tuesday: Suárez to the Yankees and right-handed pitching prospect Carlos LaGrange to the D-backs.

"A deal to acquire Suárez would allow the Yankees to shift Jazz Chisholm Jr. back to second base and give them a more complete outfield, but they will need to pay a premium given the limited alternatives for teams hunting a middle-of-the-order bat," Reuter wrote.

"Right-hander Carlos Lagrange has a big 6'7" frame and a 70-grade fastball that has helped him rack up 221 strikeouts in 156.2 innings over the course of his pro career. The 22-year-old will need to improve his command to stick as a starter, but there is impact upside and a high bullpen floor thanks to his power arm."

Suárez, 33, is a true rental, so he'd be under pressure to maintain his current offensive production for a few more months. His .894 OPS is his personal best since 2019, when he popped a career-high 49 home runs as a member of the Cincinnati Reds.

If the Yankees get Suárez, the rest of the American League will see them as a much bigger threat. Every D-backs loss for the next few weeks is good news in that regard.
