New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe played through a shoulder injury for most of the season, and it could require action over the offseason.
In early-May, Volpe suffered a partially torn labrum in his shoulder. Volpe never landed on the IL as a result, opting to play through the injury. In 2025, Volpe experienced perhaps his worst overall season yet in the Major Leagues, slashing .212/.272/.391 with 19 home runs, 72 RBIs, and a league-leading 19 errors.
In the postseason, Volpe’s struggles reached a new low, slashing .192/.192/.346 with one home run and two RBIs. In the ALDS against the Toronto Blue Jays, Volpe was 1 for 15 with 11 strikeouts.
With the offseason now on the horizon, Volpe was asked by MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch about the possibility of needing shoulder surgery to address his injury.
“I don't know. I anticipated playing another month and then reassessing then,” Volpe said. “So nothing's [decided] ... we're going to figure it out.”
Volpe and the Yankees will now take the time to assess the next steps in his rehab. The 24-year-old is running out of time to make a solid impression on the Yankees, so if he hopes to turn things around next season he’ll need to be fully healthy.
