Yankees' shortstop prospect with 'excellent swing decisions' is ready for breakout season image

With Anthony Volpe's struggles at the Major League level with the New York Yankees, fans are paying close attention to the infield prospects in the minors.

George Lombard Jr. Is the No. 1-ranked prospect in the Yankees' system, but there's another shortstop to keep an eye on.

Nineteen-year-old Dax Kilby is far away from making his MLB debut, selected 39th overall by the Yankees in the 2025 draft. New York's No. 7-ranked prospect made his professional debut this past season, playing 18 games at Single-A Tampa.

Kilby ready for breakout season

Despite his young age, Kilby's athleticism and bat-to-ball skills could help him skyrocket through the Yankees' minor league system.

"It's rare for a player to reach Single-A the same year they're drafted out of high school, and it's even rarer for them to thrive. The Georgia native was one of the most advanced high school bats in the 2025 class and showed as much when he slashed.353/.457/.441 in 18 games with more walks (13) than strikeouts (11)," MLB.com's Jesse Borek, Sam Dykstra, and Ben Weinrib wrote Thursday.

"Kilby stands out both for his excellent swing decisions and powerful, short swing, and he could jump into the Top 100 if he answers questions about his fringy infield defense."

Kilby could be the star shortstop the Yankees and the fans have been waiting for, but his progress may take quite a bit of time.
