If the New York Yankees are serious about upgrading the rotation this winter, they’re going to have to pay a high price for a starter who would be a difference maker.
That’s the issue for the best starter on the market right now.
According to Chris Kirschner of The Athletic, the Milwaukee Brewers want a great deal in any trade talks involving Freddy Peralta, and rightfully so.
“The Brewers are seeking a major-league-ready starter as part of the package, which for the Yankees likely would mean Warren or Gil. Milwaukee would also figure to ask for Jasson Domínguez or Spencer Jones. Re-signing Cody Bellinger would lessen the blow of trading either Domínguez or Jones in a potential Peralta package,” he wrote.
Peralta is very good, as he posted a 2.70 ERA last season and struck out 204 hitters. With Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon sidelined to begin the year, the fit is obvious.
He’d slide right in as the ace or No. 2 behind Max Fried.
Kirschner reports the Brewers are seeking a major-league-ready starter in the package, which would likely put Will Warren or Luis Gil in play, which, to me, would be more than fine to give up.
Regarding Jasson Dominguez and Spencer Jones, they both have been expected to be a big piece to the Yankees' future, but at some point, we have to question what their futures look like.
Frankly, if it were to cost Gil and Dominguez, I’d do it. The Yankees' window is closing very quickly and holding onto youngsters when they can land Peralta would be questionable.
