The New York Yankees have been linked to just about every star shortstop over the years, but with how poorly Anthony Volpe has played, there’s reason to believe that signing someone like Bo Bichette would make a lot of sense, right?

Well, there are a few ways to look at that, and the most important one is his price.

The price will be high, as Jon Heyman of the NY Post reported that Bichette is expected to be looking for a contract in the $300 million range.

“As an ultra young free agent at 27, Bichette’s ask is thought around $300 million, which at first blush may sound high considering that’s the ballpark of even more accomplished shortstops Corey Seager, Trea Turner and Francisco Lindor, but maybe not when you consider how deals for Juan Soto and Bichette’s teammate/great friend Vlad Guerrero Jr. Moved the market. (Logic says Seager at 27 might get $500M today considering that’s what Guerrero got.)”

On talent alone, Bichette is an obvious fit and would be what many wanted Volpe to be. Outside of his glove, he’s one of the better shortstops in baseball.

However, regarding Volpe, the Yankees were already given horrible defensive production from him last year, and his bat isn’t close to the Toronto Blue Jays free agents.

If the Yankees are serious, this is the type of move they would’ve made 20 years ago. The Yankees of the present, however, probably won’t give him $300 million.
