The New York Yankees have long been due for an upgrade at third base.
They tried to plug the hole with a second baseman for a while in Jazz Chisholm Jr., but by designating DJ LeMahieu for assignment when Chisholm was moved back to his natural position, the Yankees seemed to acknowledge their own need.
Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suárez is the most exciting name on the market right now, but the competition would likely be stiff. And if Arizona doesn't sell, the Yankees will definitely have to look into Plans B and C.
One former major league third baseman has a solution in mind.
During the latest episode of the "Talkin' Baseball" podcast, Jomboy Media's Trevor Plouffe predicted that the Yankees would acquire Ryan McMahon from the hapless Colorado Rockies.
"I am going to put Ryan McMahon on the Yankees," Plouffe said. "Obviously, the bat has not been as good as the glove this year. (But) he's in Colorado. You can't take any stat seriously for a team that's on pace to lose 130 games.

"Guys are not showing up like it's the big leagues. That's just the freaking truth. So a change of scenery's great for him."
The 30-year-old McMahon has a .683 OPS (84 OPS+) in 94 games so far. He does have 13 home runs, though, and he's pulled the ball in the air more this year, a change that would potentially pay huge dividends at Yankee Stadium.
McMahon is owed $16 million in each of the next two seasons, so the Yankees would have to feel comfortable in his ability to produce offensively in New York before taking on the full value of that deal, which was originally a $70 million commitment from the Rockies.
