The New York Yankees have had a quiet offseason so far after falling to the Toronto Blue Jays in the playoffs last October. One name that continues to draw attention is Cody Bellinger, with the Yankees reportedly making offers toward him. New York is believed to be one of the three finalists for his services.
“The market for Cody Bellinger is robust with the most likely result that he signs with a big market, contending team as expected with the Yankees, Mets, and Dodgers the most likely landing spots for him at this point in that order,” MLB insider Jim Bowden posted.
The Yankees are a big-market team capable of making significant moves if they choose. Another signing that could make this quiet offseason much more exciting is top free agent Kyle Tucker. Fox Sports’ Deesha Thosar believes the Yankees are in prime position to land him.
“With the Yankees hibernating through the winter so far, there are only a couple of moves that could realistically save their offseason from being viewed as a failure. Signing Tucker makes too much sense on a Yankees team that one year ago whiffed on Juan Soto being their long-term left-handed offensive threat. Now, they have the opportunity to lock in one of the best all-around players in baseball. Tucker’s pull-heavy swing is essentially custom-built for Yankee Stadium’s right-field short porch,” Thosar wrote.
If the Yankees make this signing happen, it could mean they pass on Bellinger. It could also mean Tucker shifts to left field, giving New York one of the top outfield trios in the league. There is no doubt that Tucker’s bat would be perfectly suited for Yankee Stadium.
If the Yankees don’t sign Bellinger before Tucker, it will be interesting to see what their next move is. Bellinger remains one of the most versatile defenders in the league, so it’s unlikely the Yankees would simply move on.
