Yankees give Paul Goldschmidt brand new role after 1,929 MLB games image

Paul Goldschmidt has never done this before.

But in his 1,930th Major League Baseball game, the New York Yankees first baseman will make his own personal history.

On Saturday, Goldschmidt is batting leadoff.

The Yankees put Goldschmidt there against Brewers lefty Nestor Cortes to gain a platoon advantage in front of 2-hitter Aaron Judge.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said he also considered Anthony Volpe atop the lineup, but he ended up going with Goldy.

“For me, I just try to take the same at-bat I always take," Goldschmidt said during spring training. "I’ve hit in a lot of different positions in my career. It’s not really different, no matter where you’re hitting. I think by the time you get in the box, you just get in there and compete, and try to have a good at-bat.”

It's the second game in a row the Yankees have made some leadoff history.

In game one, Austin Wells became the first catcher in New York's franchise history to bat atop the order. And then he became the first catcher in MLB history to hit a leadoff home run on Opening Day.

So it looks like the pressure is on for Goldschmidt. He better hit a leadoff home run, too.
