The New York Yankees added some help to the infield as Anthony Volpe recovers, and the latest update from Ken Rosenthal added some more insight on what other changes could come.

On the surface, the Paul DeJong signing doesn’t help much. He’s a low-risk move that gives the Yankees another option while Volpe rehabs from shoulder surgery. But, it could be a sign of what’s to come for Jazz Chisholm Jr., potential trade scenarios, and even a move for Bo Bichette.

According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, much of this could be a sign of what’s to come.

“The signing of free-agent infielder Paul DeJong to a minor-league contract on Sunday, first reported by Jon Heyman, provides another option at shortstop besides José Caballero and Oswaldo Cabrera as Anthony Volpe recovers from left-shoulder surgery. The Yankees have checked in on Bichette, but likely would need to trade second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. Or third baseman Ryan McMahon to accommodate him. They do not envision Bichette at shortstop,” he wrote.

While the Bichette interest might be real, it could have an impact on Chisholm.

If the Yankees plan to sign Bichette, it’d likely require a significant move with Chisholm being in a trade package.

For now, the Yankees are keeping options open. However, Chisholm’s name being mentioned this many times in recent months should be a telling sign.
