Yankees' offseason is slow for one simple reason image

Four of the five clubs in the American League East have made significant roster moves this offseason.

The New York Yankees are the exception.

But while they wait for Cody Bellinger to decide on whether he wants to continue his career in the Bronx, the Yankees have not seen many of their rumored targets sign elsewhere.

"Unless you expected them to venture out into the top of the free-agent bullpen market, something they haven't done since re-signing Zack Britton in January 2019, no free agents or trade candidates connected to the Yankees have come off the board," Mike Axisa of CBS Sports wrote Wednesday.

More than three months remain until Opening Day of the 2026 season, and the Yankees still have plenty of time to make moves, despite pressure and growing frustration from the fanbase.

Brian Cashman has a patient approach

Whether you agree with Yankees general manager Brian Cashman's approach to the offseason or not, oftentimes, he makes moves at his own pace.

"Cashman has shown a willingness to be patient, maybe even to a fault," Axisa added. "Letting the market play out into January would be on brand for the Yankees."

The Yankees made several moves at last year's trade deadline, acquiring players on both sides of the ball with multiple years of control.

Cashman may wait for Bellinger's selection before evaluating the next steps for constructing the 2026 roster. There are plenty of holes to fill, but more than a dozen of the top free agents who could be suitable fits with the Yankees remain available.
