The New York Yankees currently hold the top Wild Card spot in the American League and have their eyes set on another World Series run. However, it's never too early to start thinking about what player transactions will take place following the 2025 season.,
Most notably, the Yankees have two relievers in Luke Weaver and Devin Williams who are set to hit the open market. Williams has been so inconsistent this season, and he's likely not going to be pursued by the Yankees' front office. Luke Weaver, though, has been a steady option, but his price tag may be higher than New York is willing to pay.
What is Luke Weaver's value?
FanSided recently ran a piece on ten players who will not be on their current roster next season, and Luke Weaver was named for the Yankees:
"The problem is that he’s been so good he might have priced himself out of what the Yankees are willing to pay to keep him. With Aroldis Chapman already locked up and Edwin Diaz and Andres Munoz likely staying put, Weaver will be at or near the top of a volatile relief market this winter. Maybe New York values him enough to beat back all comers, or maybe Weaver values staying with the team that helped oversee his transition from failed starter to star reliever. This is his chance to get paid, though, and that might lead him elsewhere."
Weaver is a total journeyman, but his best two seasons as a professional have come with the Yankees. In 57.2 innings this season, Weaver has a 2.81 ERA and 64 strikeouts. He's also tallied eight saves.
New York could certainly use bullpen help if they do not opt to re-sign Weaver. Weaver has thrived in any role the Yankees have needed from him both this season and last. He was a dominant reliever in last season's playoff run, and his performance during this year's playoffs may be a large factor in the Yankees' front office making a big decision on his upcoming free agency.
