The New York Yankees have a few key players who have hit the free agent market this winter, with Cody Bellinger being the headliner by far.

But Devin Williams and Luke Weaver, two bullpen options, were very important players hitting the open market for the Yankees this winter.

Williams betrayed the Yankees, joining the New York Mets in free agency. And unfortunately for the Yankees, Joel Sherman of The New York Post reports that Weaver is joining Williams in his betrayal in joining the cross-town rival Mets in free agency.

Yankees lose Luke Weaver to Mets on $22 million deal

"The Mets are working toward trying to finalize a deal with free agent reliever Luke Weaver, a source told The Post," Sherman reports.

Sherman followed that report up with a note that this new deal with the Mets and Weaver is a two-year deal projected to be for $22 million. It's pending a physical, but barring a stunning turnaround, the Yankees will lose Weaver to the Mets.

This would be the second reliever the Yankees have lost to the Mets this winter. Williams signed with the Mets previously, and while they lost Edwin Diaz to the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Mets have now added Weaver to the fold.

Weaver was a quality option for the Yankees in the bullpen, posting a 3.62 ERA in 64 games for the Yankees this past season.

Heading into his 11th season, Weaver will now join the Mets on a multi-year deal worth $22 million, as long as he passes his physical and officially signs with the Mets.

The Yankees have a clear need in the bullpen, and while Camilo Doval and David Bednar make it not a major issue, the losses of Williams and Weaver highlight how they need to address this position group to some degree this winter.

While neither Weaver nor Williams was dominant for the Yankees in 2025, they were key contributors, and losing them means they have to find short and long-term replacements this winter.

As the Yankees pivot to other bullpen options this winter, the Mets are building a pitching staff comprised of former Yankees pitchers, with Clay Holmes, Williams, and now Weaver going from the Yankees to the Mets in recent years.
